Listening to Noelani Jones' lecture, the topic that stood out the most to me was the influence and utilization of nature in her work. I loved hearing about the different places from which she sources her materials, like animal fiber from her pets and dyes from her garden. I thought it was interesting how she was able to create a theme of community in her work too, like when she collaborated with the people around her to store tea bags and onion skins for dyes.
I'm most inspired by the theme of nature and memory in her work. I loved learning about her abstraction inspired by nature, and I'd like to make watercolor pieces using that idea. Memory was also a big theme in her work, like when she strung all of her pieces over many years together for a show. Because memory is also a theme in my work, I was especially interested in this topic, and might want to see how I can connect my pieces together in a meaningful way.
I liked the idea of painting on top of handmade fabric as well, and would be interested in seeing how many parts of my process when using watercolor I could make myself, and how I could do this with the materials around me.
