Mary Whyte is an American watercolor artist specializing in portraiture. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1953, and knew from a young age that she wanted to become an artist. Looking at her work, all of her paintings stand out to me for their amazing craft, compositions, and the feelings she is able to convey through them. Here are some of my favorites:

I love how Whyte is able to make the painting look engulfed in smoke through her amazing watercolor. I also love how much depth she is able to achieve with a limited color palette, the slight abstraction in the background, and the expression on the fire man's face, which seems to reach towards the viewer. I'd love to use her technique of combining the abstraction watercolor can make with intricate detail in my own work.

The strong blues stood out to me in this piece, especially in the way that they contrast the white dresses of the girls. I also like the small bits of blue that are dispersed through the wheat field, which I think makes the painting feel more cohesive. Lastly, I love the mood of this painting, and think that Whyte's ability to convey a scene's emotions is very powerful.
