Earlier this week, I was able to listen to artist Oura Sananikone talk about his work during his lunchtime lecture. I loved learning about his murals in particular, especially since I some of them, like the sumo wrestler mural in Carytown, frequently. I also loved hearing about the mural he made in collaboration with members of his community, who could come paint without any restrictions or waitlist or anything. I hadn't heard about this concept before, but I think it's a great idea for murals as they are meant to be enjoyed by an entire community, so it makes sense that the community has a role in their creation, too. Lastly, I liked seeing and learning about Sananikone's illustration work in manga, and how his art has been influenced by his childhood interest. If I were to hear from him again, I would like to hear more details about his process as he goes from a vague idea to a finished comic.
