Awareness Post - Annie Lapin

matildafrantz25

When looking for another artist to research, I decided to look on the New American Paintings site again to look into one of their spotlighted artists. I found Annie Lapin, an oil painter from DC who currently lives and works in Los Angeles. Annie Lapin has a Bachelor of Arts from Yale University. Additionally, she has a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate from SAIC, and a Masters of Fine Arts from UCLA. She has been in a number of solo exhibitions, including exhibitions in California, North Carolina, and Connecticut. Here is a link to a website showcasing her work: https://honorfraser.com/contributors/annie-lapin/.

I was drawn to Lapin's work because of how dramatic and bold its movement is. I also love the colors she uses, and how she is able to create abstract, nature-inspired scenes with very loose strokes.

The Ground Element Embodied (From the series: Distilled and Abstracted Elements of Isealized Landscape), 2011, oil on canvas

This is one of my favorite pieces by Lapin. I love how she conveys all of the light and movement of a rushing stream, while keeping elements of abstraction. I also really like the composition of this piece. I would love to be able to incorporate highlights like hers in my own work, as I think it would help bring it to life. I'm also interested in learning if I could make thick brush strokes like hers using a medium like gouache paints.

That is Here and There, 2013, oil and acrylic enamel spray-paint on canvas

I also love the textures and colors of this piece. I love the combination of strong vertical strokes with smaller, leaf-like ones. I also think the texture on the light blue adds a lot of interest to the piece. I've found that I connect the most with art that has nature-inspired themes like this one, so I want to try incorporating more organic shapes into my own work.
