For my first semester home project, I decided that I wanted to paint an image of someone (who probably looks a little like me) sleeping under a blanket, surrounded by lots of butterflies and growing flowers. I was inspired by the blankets I always sleep under at my grandparents' house, which are patterned with flowers and butterflies. I want this painting to feel a little like an illustration in a storybook, with faded borders and fantasy elements. I also decided to make this piece in portrait orientation rather than landscape, and to cut the side lengths to be in a 1:2 ratio. This is both because I want to branch out from my previous landscape oriented paintings, and because the side lengths of twin size mattresses have a ratio of about 1:2. I thought this was another fun way to further the idea of sleep in this piece.
When I was working on my summer project, I did a lot of practice and planning in my sketchbook, which I think greatly benefited my final product. I am trying to do the same thing with this project, through larger scale thumbnail drawings and experimenting with colors. I also started working on my paper by cutting it into a 1:2 ratio and planning out the basic shapes and composition. Here are some photos of my process:
This reminds me a bit of your Art 3 self portrait.
